Why I Love Arrow's Oliver Queen

I can't get enough of the CW's Arrow, the new re-invention of the DC Comics character Green Arrow. I'm not a huge DC fan (Marvel for me, all the way!) but there's just something about this version of Oliver Queen that I adore.

Yeah...there's six good reasons here, but I'm talking about the others

Yes, stop drooling. He's easy on the eyes, but that's not why I love Oliver Queen. It took a look of time thinking about it, but then one day I had an "Aha" moment. Ollie is very, VERY similar to one of my favorite characters of all time . . . Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin.

Oh Kenshin, you will always be my favorite

I've watched the anime, read the whole manga series, seen the OVA movies (all versions), and the new live action movie. I'm waiting on the newest two to be released in subtitles so I can get my grabby hands on them. Anyway, with my obsession with Kenshin clear, you can see how this would bleed over to good 'ol Ollie.

Oh, you want me to tell you why they're alike?

Due to circumstances out of his control, Kenshin learned to become a killing-machine at a young age.

He took part in a war as an assassin on the side of "good" to make things better for other people.

It darkened his spirit, and after the war, he swore never to kill again. He uses his strength to
protect those he loves.

Sound familiar Arrow fans?

On the island, Oliver was forced to learn to fight. and over the course of his time there, he became a hardened warrior.

In China under ARGUS' control, Oliver was forced to torture and kill enemies of the state in the name of the greater good.

When he first became the arrow, he still used his skills as a killing machine to get the results he needed. And now, he uses non-lethal force to protect those he loves, and the people of his city.

Similar backstories produced similar characters, both of which have loving hearts that they guard for the protection of others. They both would die for those they love, and yet put up a shield to protect themselves from pain. Oh boys, won't you ever learn it never works!

Anyway, that's enough of me rambling on for now. I just had to share my epiphany moment. Kenshin and Oliver, isn't it awesome. If you can think of more similarities, or other characters who fall into this same archetype, please comment. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Cover Reveal ~ Sachael Dreams by Melody Winter

Here it is!!!!

About Sachael Dreams:

Twenty-two-year-old Estelle Bailey has had enough of busy city-life and her hot-tempered ex. She escapes to the seclusion and peace of her family’s clifftop home in Ravenscar, where the soothing solitude whispers to her soul as strongly as the sea itself does. But her newfound contentment is interrupted when a mysterious man—a Sachael, master of seduction—joins her midnight swim unexpectedly.

Estelle struggles against his charm and the overpowering attraction she feels for him. He offers her a life she never could have imagined, a life beneath the waves . . . but at what cost? Before she can decide, she’s captured, ensnared by the Sect, a secret enemy of the Sachaels, becoming a pawn in a war she knew nothing about.

Now, she’s left with a new choice—escape the clutches of the Sect and flee into the ocean, or side with her alluring, intimidating captor and destroy the Sachaels forever. Can she turn her back on the man she might love, or will the secret of her heritage change everything?

Set against a picturesque backdrop, Sachael Dreams is the first in a new series, exploring themes of romance, love, and identity, and the struggle that happens when all three collide.

About Melody Winter:

Growing up, Melody Winter showed a natural ability in art, a head for maths, and a tendency to write far too long English essays. Difficult to place in the world when she graduated, she pursued a career in teaching, but eventually ended up working in Finance. Melody is convinced the methodical time she spends working with numbers fuels her desire to drift into dream worlds and write about the illusory characters in her head.

Melody Winter lives in North Yorkshire, England, with her husband and two sons. When not dealing with football, rugby, and a whole plethora of ‘boy’ activities, she will be found scribbling notes for her stories, or preparing for another trip to the beach. With an obsession for anything mythical, Melody revels in reading and writing about such creatures. In fact, if she wasn’t such a terrible swimmer, she’d say she was a mermaid.

Sachael Dreams is her debut novel, and the first in her New Adult Romantic Fantasy series—the ‘Mine Series’.

You can view more of Melody Winter on her website, Twitter or Facebook.

Book Review ~ Breathe (Devastation Episode 1) by Kelly Harvey

**Note** This is a romance with a little bit of sex, so not the "clean" types of books I promote with Anaiah. You've been warned, or intrigued, whichever suits your fancy. :-)

To continue on with my "read something different" adventure, I picked up Breathe by Kelly Harvey. It's the first episode in the Devastation series. It's a YA Sci-Fi Romance.

Oh, abs...hello.
Breathe is the story of Lexa and Gabe, childhood friends who come back together to see they've grown up, though not apart. I loved, LOVED, the friends turned lovers dynamic of their story. They had realistic fears of losing their friendship which made the tension a delight to read. The interesting twist on their fate, is that they're half-alien hybrids with huge bird/angel wings. The backstory about their alien heritage and how they got there is a quick explanation, not very deep world-building, but with this kind of fast-paced romance, it's the level it needs.

Now I haven't read a "real" romance before, not the kind you'd pick up on that shelf in the store anyway. So, while there's some heat, it's not too much for an intro reader like me. It's like Goldilocks finding those bowls of porridge...just right.

The book ends on a cliffhanger. No, not the "we'll see you in the fall" kind of cliffhanger they have in a season finale, but like a woah...you just ended it there? Good thing the author plans to release the following book in a few weeks, otherwise I'd be a little miffed. Fair warning though. You want to see what happens next.

Book Review ~ Moonless by Crystal Collier

Time for another book review! I've been expanding my reading horizons and picking up novels outside my usual genres. Today, I'm taking a look at Moonless by Crystal Collier, a historical paranormal romance.

Really stunning cover for Moonless.
Moonless has many points of view, but the main character is sixteen-year-old Alexia. She's navigating the world of a young girl coming of age in a time when "coming out" means going on the marriage market, and at the same time she discovers she's part of race of beings known as the Passionate. She must choose between the life and customs she's always known, and the impossibly handsome stranger who has stolen her heart.

The story took a little while for me to get into, likely because it's outside my normal reading bracket, but the investment was well worth it. Once Alexia learns more about her gifts and this entire other world of supernatural beings, it really takes off. Crystal's descriptions of Alexia's feelings go straight to your heart and you feel everything right along with her. There's a reason they're called the Passionate, and boy, is she ever! I absolutely love the relationship between Alexia and Kiren. He's swoon-worthy and so full of passion himself, it's hard not to get swept up in it all.

It's certainly something I've never read before, and I enjoyed the whole concept. It's not the same old vampires, werewolves, and other usual paranormal fare. These people are different, and it's an exciting new world to explore.
